A huggie is a hoop built to close tight against the lobe rather than hang from it. The band is short, the section is deep, and it opens like a clasp rather than threading through the piercing. Because it grips the lobe rather than swinging from it, a huggie can carry considerably more metal than a hoop of the same apparent size without ever feeling heavy.

This pair is sterling silver. The section is half-round Ñ flat on the inner face where it sits against the lobe, domed on the outer face. The flat back is what keeps a huggie sitting square instead of rolling forward. The band measures 4 mm, with an inside diameter of 9.10 mm.

A huggie sits where the lobe is thickest, so the fit is governed by the depth of the band as much as by the diameter. A deeper band needs a little more room behind the piercing; if you wear a huggie alongside other earrings, measure the gap you have before choosing the section.

Sterling silver is 925 parts per thousand fine silver, the balance copper. The copper is what makes it workable Ñ fine silver on its own is too soft to hold a form Ñ and it is also why sterling tarnishes: the copper reacts with sulphur in the air. Tarnish is a surface film, not corrosion. It polishes off with a silver cloth and the metal beneath is unchanged.

Care. Store silver in a closed box or a zip bag when it is not being worn Ñ tarnish is driven by air, not by wear, so the pieces you wear least are the ones that darken first. Sold as a pair.
