A cable chain is built from identical links, each set at ninety degrees to the one before it. It is the most structurally predictable chain there is: every link is the same closed ring, so a jeweller can shorten it, lengthen it or replace a damaged link anywhere along its run without interrupting the pattern.
This piece is 9ct yellow gold, 1.3 mm across the nominal width and 50 cm long, weighing approximately 2.2 g — solid throughout, not hollow-filled. Because the links alternate in plane, a cable chain lies flat, resists kinking and carries a pendant bail squarely rather than letting it roll to one side.
Will this suit me?
- Where it sits: At 50 cm it sits just below the collarbone and clears a crew neckline, giving a pendant room to hang free of fabric. It is also the usual starting length for men.
- How it looks: At 1.3 mm this is an everyday gauge: fine enough to disappear under a collar, substantial enough to be seen on its own. It weighs about 2.2 g. Plain, uniform links suit any style and any pendant.
- With a pendant: Carries most everyday pendants, including a 1 ct solitaire, without stressing the links.
- Everyday wear: 9ct is the harder alloy and stands up well to daily wear. It is solid throughout, so a jeweller can repair or shorten it.
- Finding your length: Measure a chain you already own from end to end, clasp included, or run a piece of string around your neck to where you'd like it to sit. Our sizing guide has more help.
- Other options: Lengths: 40 cm, 45 cm, 60 cm. Metals: 18ct white gold, 18ct yellow gold, 9ct white gold. Widths: 0.9 mm, 1.58 mm, 2.29 mm, 3.05 mm.

9ct yellow gold is 375 parts per thousand fine gold. The higher alloy content makes it hard and more scratch-resistant than 18ct, which is why it's always been the popular choice for everyday wear.
Servicing. Uniform links make this one of the simplest chains to alter or repair.
Weights are supplier figures and are approximate; small variation between individual pieces is normal in chain manufacture.
